Nebraska football’s top eight transfers of the Big Ten era

The transfer portal is bound to become a larger part of every program’s pathway to success, and Nebraska, while not among the teams most prominently benefiting from transfers, is no stranger to adding a key transfer. Here are the top transfers to Nebraska over the last several years.

Note: This does not include junior college transfers, or players who transferred to JUCOs from four-year schools before transferring to Nebraska.

Trey Palmer

One of the best receivers in Husker history, Palmer had 71 catches for a school-record 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022. The LSU transfer “woke up pissed off” at Iowa that year, and responded with two touchdowns in an upset win.

Samori Toure

The transfer from Montana was a big-play machine for the Huskers in 2021, catching 46 passes for 898 yards and five touchdowns. He’s appeared in 22 games for the Green Bay Packers.

Darrion Daniels

The Oklahoma State defensive lineman chose to spend his graduate year at Nebraska in 2019 because he wanted to play one season with his younger brother, Damion. Darrion was elected a captain of the team and had 34 tackles and an interception.

Tanner Lee

He arrived 18 months before the transfer portal officially became a thing in 2018, but Lee’s transfer from Tulane still gave NU its starting quarterback in 2017. He threw for 3,143 yards and 23 touchdowns in his one year as a starter. Had Mike Riley not been fired at the end of 2017, it’s possible Lee would have returned in 2018.

Casey Thompson

The Texas transfer could not rescue the Scott Frost era, though he certainly tried early in the 2022 season. He threw for 2,407 yards and 14 touchdowns in his one year on campus before transferring again to Florida Atlantic. Now he’s at Oklahoma.

Nouredin Nouili

He played in every game in 2021 and 2023, missing the 2022 season because of a NCAA drug testing rule. He began his career at Colorado State in 2019, starting seven games for the Rams, before choosing to return back to Lincoln, where he’d attended high school as a German foreign exchange student.

Ochaun Mathis

A high-priced NIL transfer from TCU, Mathis had a slow start to his 2022 season as an edge rusher, but he finished fast, particularly in NU’s 24-17 win over Iowa, when Mathis was repeatedly in the Hawkeye backfield.

Brian Buschini

The FCS punter of the year in 2021 at Montana hasn’t had quite as much success at Nebraska — in part because of injuries — but he’s been a two-year starter and put 35.1% of his punts inside the 20-yard line.
