Nebraska football’s German lineman David Hoffken a ‘freak of nature’

David Hoffken has all the physical tools to succeed at Nebraska. His early days of training camp are just about slowing things down.

Hoffken is from Kiel, Germany and played football in his home country before coming to NU, committing after a camp in June. The 22-year-old has gone through the typical newcomer growing pains. He still has to get familiar with the playbook. Defensive line coach Terrance Knighton said Hoffken was surprised by the speed of the game when camp began.

What Hoffken has done, even in the early days of camp, is stand out physically. Listed at 6-foot-7, 255 pounds and possessing a 6-11 wingspan, he looked the part of a Big Ten lineman before arriving on campus.

“He comes in, you see him here at 6 a.m. in the morning, he’s stretching,” Knighton said. “He can do, like, headstand pushups and stuff. He’s a freak of nature. So right now it’s just the speed of the game, learning the playbook, having his eyes in the right place, how to defeat blocks. The fundamentals that any other freshman or newcomer would have.”
