Nebraska football at Purdue: Journal Star predictions

For the first time this season, the Nebraska football team is hitting the road. It’s also the Huskers’ first 11 a.m. kickoff. Here’s how we see the game playing out.

GAME PICKS

With an 11 a.m. kickoff, which player brings the energy during the first quarter?

Amie Just, columnist: Dylan Raiola.

Luke Mullin, reporter: Ty Robinson fires up the defense with a third-down sack on Purdue’s first drive.

Nate Head, sports editor: Robinson is an excellent motivator, both verbally and with his play. So let’s say it’s the senior lineman.

Colton Stone, digital sports editor: John Bullock has been all over the field on defense and has a habit of making big plays.

Which team runs for more yards, and who finishes as the game’s leading rusher?

Just: Nebraska; Dante Dowdell.

Mullin: Purdue, as Devin Mockobee breaks off at least one big run of 40 yards or more.

Head: Nebraska, playing with the lead, has more team rushing yards, but Mockobee has the best individual day.

Stone: Nebraska finishes with more yards, but my wild card to lead the game is Purdue’s Reggie Love III.

After allowing 31 points last week, how does the Nebraska defense fare?

Mullin: It’s back to business for the Blackshirts, who rush the passer effectively once again.

Head: Nebraska was all over Hudson Card at Memorial Stadium last year, and this time should be no different.

Stone: The Blackshirts have a point to prove and will mostly smother the Boilermakers. Still expect them to give up an explosive play or two, though.

How will Nebraska’s special teams unit perform?

Just: Better, but not a game-changer.

Mullin: John Hohl makes the only field goal he attempts and Nebraska calls it good there.

Head: I think we’ll see a buttoned-up effort here. Nebraska won’t attempt a lengthy field goal as it tries to ease John Hohl in.

Stone: Clean effort with minimal mistakes and would not be surprised at multiple fourth-down attempts in Purdue territory.
