Nebraska D-lineman Stephon Wynn enters the transfer portal

One of Nebraska’s most veteran defensive linemen will play his sixth and final college season elsewhere.

In perhaps the Huskers’ first surprising portal departure of the ongoing spring transfer window, senior Stephon Wynn is leaving the team according to multiple reports. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound senior and former Alabama transfer played in every game last season and finished with a career-high 22 tackles.

Wynn made five stops for the second-team defense in the spring game last weekend. NU’s No. 1 frontline that day was Nash Hutmacher, Georgia transfer MJ Sherman and true freshmen Princewill Umanmielen and Cameron Lenhardt.

Wynn spoke with reporters after an April 13 practice and reflected on his unexpected journey from top national prospect to the SEC — he won a national title in 2020 — to Nebraska. He arrived in Lincoln last June seeking a new opportunity and never caught his breath as the Huskers prepared for a Week Zero game in another country and underwent a coaching change soon after.

“It wasn’t planned this way,” Wynn said. “But everything happens for a reason. God has a plan for everybody so I’m taking it and enjoying it and trying to make the best of it.”

Wynn was among a few linemen to regularly receive individual skill instruction from position coach Terrance Knighton in the early portion of practices viewed by media members. He considered turning pro last this cycle.

“I just felt that I didn’t do all I could do to give myself the best chance (last year),” Wynn said earlier this month. “I feel like I can come back and give myself a better chance to maybe go higher (in the draft) and get more opportunity.”

Wynn’s departure leaves starter Ty Robinson and Hutmacher as the only defenders to see time on the line for NU last season.

Wynn is officially the third Husker to enter the portal in the last two days after quarterback Richard Torres and receiver Victor Jones. Quarterback Logan Smothers also reportedly intends to enter.

The window for college football players to transfer began April 15 and closes Sunday.
