After rumors were swirling about Nebraska looking to cancel next season’s football game at Oklahoma, it now appears that they are exploring options to cancel the annual basketball series with Creighton. The Husker men’s basketball team has lost nine out of their last ten matchups against Creighton while the women’s basketball team has lost five matchups against the Lady Jays.
Creighton was initially disgusted at this proposal but is now having second thoughts as they try to work on including the Nebraska-Creighton volleyball series as part of the deal (a 19-0 series advantage for Nebraska).

In-state recruiting for the 2022 recruiting class looks worse each time one of the state’s top prospects puts out a top school list. Outside linebacker Devon Jackson and Deshawn Woods did not include Nebraska in their top groups this winter. This week Bellevue West tight end Kaden Helms released his top 10 schools. It did not include Nebraska.
The Big Ten graded out at KenPom as a historically great conference this year. The league had some really good teams, but I think the lofty rankings had more to do with this crazy pandemic-altered season throwing the metrics out of whack than anything else.
Nebraska finished the regular season with a record of 43-18, winning 70% of all its matchups. The Huskers finished second at both the Music City Classic and the Mid-Winter Invitational with a pair of third-place finishes at the Columbia 300 Saints Invite and Prairie View A&M Invitational.
The Nebraska softball team travels to Piscataway, N.J., this weekend for a four-game Big Ten Conference series with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The teams will open the series with a single game Friday at 2 p.m. (Central) before playing a doubleheader on Saturday at Noon (Central). The series finale is set for 10 a.m. (Central) on Sunday.
The Husker take a six-game winning streak into Friday’s series opener, which is set for 6 PM (CT). Saturday’s game is scheduled for 5 PM and the series is set to conclude on Sunday at Noon. The two teams last met in Champaign during the 2018 season, with Illinois winning the first two games before the Huskers avoided a sweep with a win in the series finale.
Dawson has a long history coaching special teams, so this should be a natural transition. Really, NU’s full-time assistant coaches have always been involved in special teams and will continue to be.
Williams said the past year has been “challenging.” The start of Nebraska’s season was delayed about 10 days due to COVID-19 cases for the Huskers. But Nebraska played 19 of its 20 scheduled Big Ten games and even played into the postseason in the WNIT.
For the Huskers, gritty has been plenty attractive. Such plays — like winning a full count, stealing a base, going first to third, collecting a two-out RBI hit or getting hit by a pitch — have helped push them into a second-place tie in the Big Ten and within a half-game of Indiana through four weekends.
The players contend that the NCAA is operating a system that is a classic restraint of competition in violation of the federal laws barring price-fixing in markets, including the labor market. There is little doubt that big-time college sports is a big business. For March Madness TV rights alone, the NCAA is paid $1.1 billion each year. But the NCAA maintains that the antitrust law allows it to impose certain limits on athlete compensation in order to preserve what the NCAA contends is the essence of college sports’ popularity: namely amateurism.
