Nebraska Can’t Hold 7-0 Lead in Loss to San Diego

More crooked numbers on a Friday and a healthy lead weren’t enough this time for Nebraska (1-3, 0-0 Big Ten) to start the weekend with a win.

After neither team produced a run in the first inning, the Huskers got a Gunner Hellstrom single to bring in Leighton Banjoff in the second. Then in the third, Nebraska posted six runs courtesy five hits and a pair of errors by San Diego (4-1, 0-0 WCC).

The Toreros answered with three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth before the Huskers added two more in the sixth.

Nebraska led 9-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but San Diego used four hits and two Husker errors to post five runs and tie the game at nine.

The Huskers briefly took the lead in the eighth as a Mojo Hagge single brought in Banjoff. But in the bottom of the inning the Toreros brought in three runs to lead 12-10.

Nebraska managed a run in the ninth but couldn’t close the gap, falling 12-11.

The Huskers posted 18 hits on the game but left 11 runners on base.

Cam Chick, after notching five hits last weekend, led the Huskers with a 4-for-5 outing. Five other Huskers had multi-hit performances, including Aaron Palensky and Banjoff who each produced three-hits.

Garreth Stroh made his second start for Nebraska, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Stroh struck out four batters and issued no walks.

Nebraska continues at the Tony Gwynn Legacy Saturday at 8 p.m. against San Diego State (4-1, 0-0 Mountain West).
