Greg Sharpe, the voice of Nebraska football, announced he has been diagnosed with cancer.
Sharpe revealed the news Monday on “Sports Nightly,” the weeknight show he hosts with Jessica Coody on the Husker Radio Network.
Sharpe did not specify the diagnosis, but he said it involved the “pancreatic region of the body.”
Sharpe has been the play-by-play commentator for Nebraska football since 2008. Sharpe also does play-by-play for the Husker baseball team, and he said his course of treatment could interfere with game broadcasts and episodes of his show.
Sharpe said he was reluctant to share the news publicly but decided to make the announcement in part to explain potential absences.
After learning his diagnosis in recent weeks, Sharpe says he set a goal.
“I want to get this thing, whup its butt and get myself ready for football because I think we are going to have a fabulous, fabulous football season around here in the fall,” Sharpe said.
Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen was one of many to issue support to Sharpe on X, formerly Twitter.
“We are strong behind @SharpeGreg as he fights the toughest fight. The power of our Husker Nation is here to support him. GBR!” Dannen wrote.
