Nebraska basketball set to pitch Gonzaga transfer Hunter Sallis

Two Nebraska basketball coaches spent part of Easter pitching a key transfer portal target.

NU coach Fred Hoiberg and assistant Nate Loenser on Sunday traveled to Spokane, Wash., for a visit with Gonzaga transfer Hunter Sallis, according to a source. The Huskers were on the outside looking in during Sallis’ initial recruitment out of Millard North High School but have a much better chance this time of landing the 6-foot-5, 180-pounder.

Sallis spent two seasons at a top reserve for the Bulldogs, who advanced to the Elite Eight this season. Sallis emerged as a defensive stopper and shot 51% from the floor in limited opportunities, as the team largely oriented around getting center Drew Timme the ball in the paint. Hunter’s father, Trevis, said “style of play” and strong academics will factor into his decision.

A variety of power conference programs have reached out to Hunter Sallis over the last week, but Nebraska has maintained strong contact throughout.

The Huskers hosted one transfer guard – Charlotte’s Brice Williams – this weekend, and will host another, Siena’s Javian McCollum, the following week.

Williams, 6-7, is a volume 40% 3-point shooter who helped the 49ers win the CBI while averaging 15 points and eight rebounds in two games against Final Four participant Florida Atlantic.

McCollum, 6-1, averaged 17 points 5.5 assists and 1.4 steals in four games against power conference competition including a 24-point, eight-assist performance against Mississippi. He told College Basketball Report he has Nebraska, Creighton, Oklahoma, South Florida and Central Florida in his top five. UCF will join the Big 12 this summer.

In a March interview, Hoiberg said Nebraska plans on adding at least a point guard and scoring post player to replace the departing Sam Griesel and Derrick Walker. On the post front, NU will host Pittsburgh transfer John Hugley for the Husker football spring game.

NU currently has four open scholarships, two of which opened up after Oleg Kojenets and Denin Dawson chose to transfer. The Huskers welcome incoming IMG Academy guard Eli Rice, the lone high school signee, this summer.
