Nebraska announces new men’s golf and tennis coaches

Mark Hankins was named Nebraska’s new men’s golf coach Wednesday, while Sam Maymi was named Nebraska’s men’s tennis coach.

Hankins comes to Nebraska after serving as an assistant athletic director at Iowa, including the last two years as a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee.

“Mark Hankins will bring a track record of proven success in the Big Ten Conference and on the national level to our men’s golf program,” Moos said. “He has built strong teams at both Michigan State and Iowa, and we look forward to him providing leadership for Nebraska men’s golf.”

Hankins led the Hawkeyes to six straight NCAA Tournament appearances and 11 team tournament championships from 2009-2014 as the head coach.

Prior to his 11 years in the Iowa Athletic Department, Hankins spent eight seasons (2000-07) as the head men’s golf coach at Michigan State. He led the Spartans to five NCAA Tournament appearances from 2002 through 2007, including Big Ten Championship team titles in 2005 and 2007.

Hankins was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year in both seasons the Spartans claimed the team crowns. Overall, in 15 seasons as a Big Ten men’s golf head coach, Hankins coached five All-Americans, 21 All-Big Ten golfers, including two Big Ten Players of the Year and a Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Maymi had two successful stints as associate head coach at Michigan, helping the Wolverines to eight NCAA Tournament appearances in nine seasons as an assistant.

This past season, Maymi helped guide Michigan back to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament again, as the Wolverines finished No. 14 in the final ITA rankings after a 22-6 season that included an 8-2 Big Ten Conference mark.

For three seasons from 2011-12 through 2013-14, Maymi stepped away from collegiate tennis to work as the general manager of the global division and director of business development for Todd Martin Tennis in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Martin is the current CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and a former ATP Player who was ranked as high as No. 4 in the world in the 1990s.

Maymi also spent time as an assistant at Fresno State, Northwestern and North Florida.

“I am delighted that Sean Maymi will be leading our men’s tennis program,” Moos said. “His energy and vision along with his background as a proven winner fit perfectly with the goals and objectives that we embrace at Nebraska.”

Moos fired former golf coach Bill Spangler and former tennis coach Kerry McDermott on May 16.

“These were some moves that were probably due at this point,” Moos said. “It was no knee-jerk decision. We looked at a lot of things before we made the final decision to make changes.”
