Nebraska and NIL

Nebraska’s NIL is trailing far behind other schools where their boosters are giving millions upon millions to NIL for the benefit of their players. At Nebraska only Adrian Martinez made more than $100,000. While that is nothing to sneeze at, it is nothing compared to what players are making at some universities.

One example is the Alabama QB Bryce Young who had never taken a snap who said he would make $800,000 in NIL this season. Another example is that blue chip QB from Texas, Quinn Ewers, who decided to quit high school after his junior year to get paid NIL money, and enroll early at Ohio State. By the way, Quinn Ewers is entering the portal, and is likely going to Texas, Texas Tech, or Texas A&M. He will likely go to a place where he can play relatively soon, and where he will get paid handsomely. Remember this kid should still be in high school.

Speaking of Ohio State, was anyone else puzzled by Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson opting to come back for another season at Ohio State when they both would have likely been selected in the first couple of rounds of the NFL draft? Obviously they must be already making NFL type money at Ohio State this season through their NIL.

How is Nebraska going to compete for talent? How is Nebraska going to retain and protect its best players from other teams whispering in their ears about the transfer portal and promises of lucrative NIL deals?

For many years, college football has been an amateur sport in name only. Some universities have found ways to get money to players and their families, legally or not. However, we are seeing with NIL that college football is becoming a professional sport, and that the players are going to be paid. All things being equal, the best players will go to where they are offered the most money. The sooner Nebraska realizes that, the better.
