Matt Rhule has spent time in the past week on the phone, getting into contact with old friends in North Carolina, concerned about the impacts of Hurricane Helene.
Rhule coached the Carolina Panthers from 2020 to 2022 but was closer to the area most directly affected by the storm when he was the linebackers and special teams coach at Western Carolina from 2002 to 2005. He and his wife Julie lived in Cullowhee, North Carolina, around an hour from Asheville.
“All those wonderful people in all those small towns, up through into Tennessee and down into Georgia, my heart is certainly with them,” Rhule said. “As someone who’s been a part of a few of those disasters, you see the absolute worst, and then sometimes you have a chance to also see the absolute best. People picking up and leaving their lives to run to help, but it’s sad and it’s unfortunate.”
