Mike Matya (Husker Illustrated, Husker Online) has passed away

>Sorry that we were not the first ones to bring you the heartbreaking announcement of Mike passing on Sunday. He literally was sent home to hospice care on Saturday and passed Sunday evening at 7:00. With the passing so late in the day and out of respect for the family we chose not to ask about informing our message board community out of respect.

>Here is the statement that I had prepared:

>It is with tremendous sadness that I have to announce the passing of our friend and colleague Mike Matya. Mike passed away on Sunday at home in Bellevue.

>I started covering Nebraska recruiting in 1999 and Mike was one of the first people I was able to work with under the direction of Duane “Roz” Rossiter. I reconnected with Mike again some years later when Sean Callahan added me to his staff. Mike had such a great perspective as a writer and he was always someone that I enjoyed brainstorming with.

>Few know the details of how Mike fought the past couple of years. He was courageous and he never wanted to let us or the site down, ever. He didn’t need to work. He chose to even when he was suffering.

>Through Mike’s health challenges I had some of my best conversations with him. While he was suffering he was more interested in me, how I was doing and my family. He talked to me about what he felt was really important: family and time. Mike would never let me skip a family event to help him and always wanted to know how my family was doing even at the end dealing with his declining health and regular hospital stays.

>My heart goes out to his mom, his family and his friends. Thanks to Mike’s sister I was blessed to share with Mike how much he was loved and how important he was to me as a friend just hours before passing away on Sunday evening.

>Mike will be missed by all of us here at the Nebraska On3 site. His suffering is over. May he rest in peace.
