Memorial Stadium Survey was a big downer for me

I’m a pretty big lurker on Reddit, and the few times I post I realize I don’t have opinions that many people share, but I’ll throw this out there anyways.

I got the Memorial Stadium survey this morning. I get family season tickets, so I am not the purchaser or the tickets, but I reimburse my family for the cost, and have been sitting in the seats for over 20 years.

The reason we do this, is the family member we buy them from still wants to make the touchdown club donation in the name of her late husband, as they were his tickets originally. We sit in the north stadium in row 26, so they are good seats. We are grandfathered in at a touchdown club donation of $175 per seat, so $350 for both seats.

I recently looked at what the touchdown club donation would be if we transferred the tickets into my name, and lost our grandfathered status. At $750 per seat I would simply not get season tickets anymore.

The survey mentioned two things. First they are likely going to get rid of the grandfathered donations like mine, and try to charge everyone the same donation price, which would allow them to lower the donation per section, but it would raise the donation for everyone who is grandfathered. They gave two options, and the cheapest option was $400 per seat for my section, so $800 total.

I do not see how I can ask my family member to more than double their donation, nor am I willing to cough up the additional $450 to get the tickets.

I totally understand that our grandfathered price is unrealistic based on seat licenses for pro stadiums, and likely other big 10 stadiums. So I’m not saying that Nebraska is doing anything out of line with other stadiums by raising the prices. I’m just saying that I won’t get tickets anymore. Even if I were to try and stay at $200 per seat, the only options were the high rows of North and South stadium and the 600 section. I know…the 600 section is pretty nice, but you absolutely bake in the September afternoon games.

The real kicker is that at the end they say “We may institute an additional seat license, this one to the university instead of the touchdown club”. So not only am I going to lose my grandfathered status, but I will have to pay another amount (who knows how much).

Overall I don’t know how they can start asking for more money out of people when the product on the field is as bad as it is. I think you can kiss the sellout streak goodbye if they keep heading down this path.
