Mayor Beutler Clashes with Councilwoman Cyndi Lamm Over Tax Errors

The mayor called out a sitting member of the City Council in an emergency meeting last night over her comments about the ciy’s budget.

The differnces of opinion between the mayor Beutler and Councilwoman Cyndi Lamb comes from a state law that gives Nebraska cities the authority to only use a maximum of 2.5% of gathered funds per year for city needs. City’s are allowed to add an extra 1% to that spending authority ONLY when three-fourths, or 75% of the city council vote to approve it.

Councilwoman Cyndi Lamm tells Coby mach on Drive Time Lincoln that for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 the city approved the 1% increase, but with only 5 out of 7, or 71% of votes. Her arguement is that if these errors were corrected, the cumulative spending authority for Lincoln would decrease from 3.9 million to around 1.5 million, and with lower spending authority, would come lower taxes.

On the flip side, Mayor Beutler says that the issue has nothing to do with taxes, but with spending. At a press conference, Mayor Beutler says the 1% increases have been vital in meeting Lincoln’s growing needs and notes the state auditor recommended no change when presented with the errors. Beutler says that Lamb’s comments are not helpful and her continued objection to the increase is partly responsible for a “growth barrier” that threatens to choke-hold the expanding needs of the city.
