Maurice Washington will be a Game-Time Decision, Other News and Notes from Practice

Speaking to reporters from the Hawks Championship Center, NU head coach Scott Frost said that a decision on whether sophomore running back Maurice Washington will play on Saturday won’t come until right before kickoff.

“Maurice has been doing a good job of practicing with the intention that he’s going to play,” Frost said. “The ball’s not in his court. It’s in our court as the University and for the football program to decide but he’s been doing a great job doing everything we asked him through fall camp, so he’ll be ready if that’s the decision that’s made.”

Washington is facing two charges, including a felony, back in his home state of California. He has a hearing set in a Santa Clara County Court on September third, three days following Nebraska’s season opener against South Alabama.

Frost also declined to make any further comment on redshirt freshmen Andre Hunt and Katerion Legrone, who were suspended indefinitely yesterday. Hunt is a wide receiver while Legrone is a tight end.

In other news and notes:

  • Frost mentioned that he wasn’t very happy with the Husker’s practices on Tuesday and Wednesday but mentioned he liked what he saw during their walk-through on Thursday.
  • No additional scholarships to walk-ons have been awarded, Frost said.
  • Frost said he’s “pleased” where the team is right now, especially compared to where they were last year.
  • Frost said he wanted to see speed from his players in “all three phases of the game.” Frost added that he wants to see the defense generate more turnovers as well.
  • Frost and the rest of the coaching staff are still “on the fence” for some players in regards to whether or not they will redshirt them.
  • Carol Frost, the mother of Scott Frost, will be inducted into the 2019 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame Class Friday evening. “Mom is the best athlete in the family,” Frost said. “She might be the best coach in the family… she deserves every accolade she gets.”
