Matt Rhule updates status of Rahmir Johnson and DeShon Singleton, defends Marcus Satterfield

Nebraska running back Rahmir Johnson won’t play in Saturday’s game at Ohio State, NU coach Matt Rhule announced on Tuesday. Johnson got hurt in the Huskers’ 56-7 loss at Indiana.

In Johnson’s absence, Rhule said Gabe Ervin and Dante Dowdell will get more playing time, particularly on third down.

“Ohio State has an excellent pass rush but also excellent blitzers, so having bigger men in there, in some ways, is a good thing,” Rhule said. Redshirt freshman running back Kwinten Ives will also get a chance at more playing time.

Safety DeShon Singleton, also injured against the Hoosiers, will play at the Horseshoe, one of the nation’s most daunting stadiums. Nebraska has never won there, and is 25-point underdog to the fourth-ranked Buckeyes.

“They have no weakness,” Rhule said of OSU. He repeated the phrase before adding Ohio State has one of the top rosters in college football. “Great coaching staff, great schemes. It’s one of those deals where you have to go play well.”

Rhule said Nebraska’s players improved in multiple areas during this week’s practice, but OSU’s “too good” an opponent to attempt some “large, philosophical” discussion or overhaul.

He brought up NU offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, whose Tuesday “you’ve stumped me” answer to a question about yards per play made the rounds on social media.

“I don’t want Satt worried about the yards per play,” Rhule said. “I want him worried about blocking No. 91 from Ohio State. So we have to be very in the moment.”
