Matt Rhule praises Heinrich Haarberg’s acceptance of unique role for Nebraska football


LINCOLN — The Memorial Stadium crowd let out a roar when Heinrich Haarberg stepped onto the field against Northern Iowa. Once the starting quarterback, now the backup who moonlights as a gadget player in certain packages, the Kearney product had earned enough of the coaching staff’s trust to be featured in the red zone as the Huskers tried to put away UNI in the third quarter.

He caught a pass for an 8-yard gain on an option route, then took a handoff up the middle for 5 yards. He took the snap on his third play and rushed for another yard.

Three quarterbacks played for Nebraska in 2023. Haarberg is the only one who didn’t transfer over the offseason and is now reaping the benefits of staying at NU with his own niche in the offense.

“I think historically, I know the crowd cheers a little bit more for the kids from Nebraska when they announce their names, which, I’ll be honest, I think they’re all our kids, so I root for them all, but I do think what Heinrich has done means something to me,” NU coach Matt Rhule said. “He’s stuck around, not just accepted a role, but accelerated role.”
