Matt Rhule is focusing on Nebraska’s practices, not the transfer portal opening

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule addresses reporters after the Huskers’ practice on Tuesday, April 11.

The transfer portal opens across college football Saturday. Matt Rhule has been too focused on spring practices to think much about it.

The 15-day window — during which time players are allowed to enter their names in the portal and be contacted by other schools — will inevitably lead to some attrition as Nebraska begins to work down from nearly 100 scholarship players to the 85-man limit by fall camp. The timing isn’t perfect for Nebraska with its spring game on April 22 perhaps rushing the evaluation process for some.

Rhule said no one has expressed to him a desire to leave so far. Coaches will meet with every player on the team the week after the final scrimmage.

“I’ve been pretty straightforward that I look at the transfer portal as a tremendous opportunity for guys to figure out where they want to go,” Rhule said. “Some people probably don’t make the right decision, some people do make the right decision. I think the main issue as coaches sometimes is inducing people to leave places for the wrong reasons. … I care deeply about all of our guys and I want them to go where they’re going to be happy.”
