Matt Rhule gives updates on Nebraska’s Signing Day

Matt Rhule minced few words in his signing day news conference. He only had a few new recruits to discuss, so he spent a good chunk of his media availability discussing what it’ll take to improve on a 5-7 season.

“My urgency is on high,” Rhule said Wednesday as he discussed winter conditioning workouts. He can’t watch the players compete, but he sees the scores coming in and notices where returning players score high or score low.

“What was really good last year and is now just OK,” Rhule said. He sees a “night and day” difference in players’ understanding of his culture, but wants to see the team keep improving the grasp of his standards.

* Nebraska football players likely to miss spring due to injuries include Turner Corcoran, Gabe Ervin, Rahmir Johnson, Malachi Coleman and Princewill Umanmielen. Corcoran appears to be the most serious of those; he hurt his foot late last season and may not return until training camp.

* New quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas helped Rhule transform Temple quarterback PJ Walker and get Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer on the right track as a true freshman. Thomas can coach any style of quarterback, Rhule said, from “the ground up.”

* Marcus Satterfield will continue to call plays for the Huskers in Nebraska’s new setup of offensive coaches. Thomas will have the co-offensive coordinator role, but Satterfield, who now oversees the tight ends, will run the room.

“Satt will be in charge,” Rhule said. Satterfield has an “aggressive personality” that better fits the tight end spot vs. coaching quarterbacks.

* Rhule said NU will go “all in” on the three quarterbacks currently on the roster. He’s not as excited in bringing in a fourth QB if that player is a senior.

“Bringing a guy in for one year is not ideal for me,” Rhule said.

* Wake Forest receiver transfer Jahmal Banks is “dominating” in offseason competition.

* Newest signee Keona Wilhite is “exactly the kind of player we’re looking for” with his height and weight combination. Wilhite was headed to UCLA before Bruin coach Chip Kelly started looking at NFL offensive coordinator roles.

“When you’re that big and that athletic, it’s a no-brainer,” Rhule said.

* Rhule is bullish on NU’s walk-on class, which includes both preferred walk-ons who may not have a robust name, image and likeness deal and premium walk-ons who will. Rhule said three or four players in the class will eventually start.

“It’s a bold statement, maybe,” Wilhite said, “but I really believe it.”

* Rhule confirmed the roster departures of guard Ethan Piper — retiring from the sport due to a series of injuries — and linebacker Kaine Williams, an Alabama transfer who appeared in four games last season. NU’s roster stood at 149 players, according to its official online count.

* A linchpin in Nebraska’s recruitment of Miami-area athletes, defensive quality control staffer Philip Simpson, has left NU for a role at another school. Simpson, formerly the head coach at Miami Homestead High School, had just recruited in January for the Huskers as Thomas transitioned from his role with the Steelers to Nebraska.
