Matt Rhule gives update on Mac Markway’s progress getting up to speed with Nebraska’s playbook

Mac Markway watched Nebraska’s win over UTEP from the sideline at Memorial Stadium. The Huskers’ newest tight end wore his jersey without shoulder pads underneath.

There’s still a chance his Nebraska debut comes later this season as he gets up to speed and adjusts to a new setting.

Much of the NU coaching staff, including Matt Rhule, has experience working in the NFL, where quick turnarounds for new acquisitions are common. Although with Thomas Fidone, Luke Lindenmeyer and Nate Boerkircher entrenched in the tight end room, there’s no urgency to throw Markway into the fray before he’s ready.

He left LSU less than a month ago before enrolling at Nebraska and walking onto the team and has three years of eligibility and a potential remaining.

“We’re gonna try to get him ready to play, and once he is, we’ll see where we are,” Rhule said. “One injury to one guy, you definitely need him. It’s just a lot. He has to see how well he learns everything that we do. But yeah, we’re definitely working at it. (Director of player personnel) Keith Williams is doing a great job tutoring him. Their job is to get him ready for this Saturday. My job is to say, hey, what’s the best thing in the long run for each player?”
