Matt Rhule details impact of Bud Crawford’s appearance

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule speaks at a news conference on Monday.

As Terence “Bud” Crawford led the Huskers out of the tunnel for their rivalry game against Colorado, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule relished the moment.

“To me, that was a special thing,” Rhule said. “I have so much respect for Bud Crawford.”

Crawford’s appearance with the team was one of Rhule’s highlights of the year. Rhule said he came to talk to the team Friday night.

When Crawford came to meet Rhule, he sat with the Nebraska head coach.

“I’m talking to the pound-for-pound king,” Rhule said. “I’m sitting there; I’m in awe.”

Crawford told Rhule he didn’t have to talk to the team, but Rhule said he wanted him to. He emphasized how no one knows more about getting in the ring and battling than him, and his advice could help the team go a long way.

Rhule said how Crawford was the most humble regular guy. Even after the win over Colorado, Rhule tried to give him the game ball.

“He was like no,” Rhule said, recalling Crawford’s reaction. “I’m not happy with the way you guys played in the fourth quarter.”

Rhule emphasized how this moment isn’t just about Colorado, but it’s about the whole season. He said how Crawford can say something he’s said 500 times, and it’ll get through to the team.

“I can’t thank him enough,” Rhule said. “He had a real impact on the game this week.”
