Nebraska football’s offense had a big day in the second major scrimmage of spring camp, coach Matt Rhule said Saturday afternoon.
“The offense got after the defense today,” Rhule said, noting the offense hadn’t been this “dominant” in a scrimmage since he took over the NU program.
The Huskers scored, by Rhule’s estimation, “eight, nine, 10, 12 touchdowns out there today” thanks to explosive plays and Rhule’s willingness to let plays extend without quarterbacks who could be hit.
“The ability to throw and catch — guys making plays after the catch — has been good,” Rhule said.
One of those touchdown drives, Rhule said, was a 99-yard march. Rhule didn’t recall which of Nebraska’s three quarterbacks — Heinrich Haarberg, Dylan Raiola or Daniel Kaelin — led that drive, part of a 120-play live scrimmage.

“All three quarterbacks played really well,” Rhule said, declining to get into specifics. “… The quarterbacks excelled at taking what was there.”
More notes
* Running back Emmett Johnson “really sort of stands out” in his room with his versatility to run, catch and protect the quarterback in pass blocking.
* Jack linebacker Chief Borders is the team’s “most improved player” in spring, Rhule said, and has been “a problem” for the offense on pass rushes.
* Junior quarterback Heinrich Haarberg is “light years ahead” as a passer in 2024 compared to 2023.
* Rhule likes the in-helmet playcalling communication system — long in use by the NFL, approved for use by the NCAA in 2024 — because it helps the backup quarterbacks know what the coaches are saying to the starter.
“Transformational,” Rhule said.
He anticipates, however, that teams will still continue to signal in plays, particularly on defense, where, because only one player has a “green dot” communication helmet at a time on the field, and a defender can’t possibly relay a call to his 10 teammates in 12-to-15 seconds.
* Rhule said he’s excited to move into the new football building, which will be called the Osborne Legacy Complex.
“My office is nicer than my first house,” Rhule quipped.
