Long Ball Costly in 3-2 Loss to Arizona

After starting the year with an 11-run first inning that led to a 19-9 win at Baylor, runs have become more of a premium for Nebraska (1-5, 0-0 Big Ten).

In the final game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy in San Diego, the Huskers managed just three hits over the course of the game. One of those hits, a single by Leighton Banjoff, led to his eventual scoring on a Joe Acker sacrifice fly in the second inning. That would prove to be Nebraska’s only run of the game.

Arizona (5-2, 0-0 Pac-12) got on the board in the fourth inning on a Blake Paugh solo home run to tie the game. The next three batters were struck out by Cade Povich to get him to four strikeouts so far.

Povich struck out two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth, but Paugh again went yard, this time a two-run shot to left field. Povich added another strikeout before Kyle Perry came in in relief. Perry and Max Schreiber finished the final 3 1/3, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

The final hit for the Huskers came in the eighth inning, as Cam Chick hit a leadoff home run to cut the deficit to one run. The next six Nebraska batters would be retired in order as Arizona took the 3-2 win.

Nebraska will try to end the five-game losing streak with a three-game series at Arizona State (4-3, 0-0 Pac-12) February 28 through March 1.
