Loading Coal Into The Baseball Hype Train

With the College Baseball season just over two months away, opening Friday, February 16th, I’m finding it difficult to contain my excitement. So I’ve decided to go down the roster and pick out some names I’m excited to see this season. I plan on releasing a couple of these posts, as they will be pretty long in the tooth.

BoltBall has consistently found itself fraught with questions before every season. Baseball is somewhat unique in the world of college athletics, as good players don’t typically stick around long. As such, rosters tend to turn over at a faster pace than any other sport. It seems every year, about half the team is brand new, and this season is no different. So here, I’ll be sticking to the names I know. I’ll be adding a little information why I’m excited to see them play. Let’s get to it:

Garrett Anglim (Outfield) (Redshirt Junior)

Anglim has been an interesting “what-if” so far in his Husker career. In 2022, the right fielder burst onto the scene in game two against Iowa, hitting 3 home runs. As my friend and I sat at the game, I distinctly remember saying “they won’t pitch to him again.” after his second long ball. Iowa did pitch to him again, and it was a mistake.
Anglim has outstanding power at the plate, and decent discipline. He’s strong and athletic, with decent speed. Unfortunately, last season he suffered an injury early against Vanderbilt. While he returned later in the year, mostly pulling DH duty, I simply feel like we’ve yet to get the full Anglim experience. If he can stay healthy this season, he should be an exciting player for the Huskers.

Dylan Carey (Inf, 3B) (Sophomore)

Carey got the nod at 3rd base early in his Husker career, and it’s easy to see why. The lanky, speedy athlete made playing the hot corner look easy. Carey is an accurate thrower and a vacuum cleaner out there.
Carey finished the season hitting a healthy .275, with 30 RBI’s. Of his 57 hits last season, just 4 left the yard. 42 of his hits were singles. Watch for Carey to make a big jump this season. It may be early, but he certainly seems to be on track to be the next big name in Husker Baseball.

Gabe F’ing Swansen (OF, Left Field) (Senior)

Gabe was a huge (albeit quiet) surprise last season. While he lived in the shadow of Anderson and Matthews, Swansen was absolutely no slouch. From the 4 spot, Gabe finished the season with a batting average of .291, with 18(!) home runs and 57 RBI’s.
Swansen did a great job in left all year, and is looking to reprise his role as the big stick this season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the clean up spot yet again.
Look, folks, I love this guy. He just goes out there and does big time baseball stuff. No praise needed, an absolute team player. Gabe rules.

That’s all for now. I’m open to suggestions and thanks for reading!
