Mikey Labriola and Chad Red Jr. earned All-America honors for Nebraska at the 2021 NCAA Championships with blood round wins on Friday night. After two days of wrestling, Nebraska sits in 11th place with 33.5 points at the NCAA Championships.
With a win in the Round of 12, Red Jr. became an All-American for the fourth time in his career. He is the Huskers’ third four-time All-American in program history, joining James Green and Bryan Snyder. Nebraska has had at least two wrestlers earn All-America honors since 2012 and the program has earned a total of 122 combined awards from 67 wrestlers.
Red Jr. (141) started the night with an 8-7 decision over Missouri’s #6 Allan Hart. The senior scored four nearfall points, two escapes and a reversal to take the close match and survive the Round of 12. In his next match, he met UNC’s #10 Zachary Sherman. The two would wrestle to tiebreakers with Red scoring the deciding escape to advance to the consolation semifinals for a chance at the third-place match.
Labriola (174) earned an 8-4 decision in the blood round over North Carolina’s #16 Clay Lautt on Saturday evening. He scored a takedown in every period and added an escape and a riding time point to secure his third career All-America nod. In his second match of the session, he defeated NC State’s Daniel Bullard 7-4 to keep moving towards a spot in the third-place bout.
Taylor Venz was the final of three Huskers to take the mat in the Round of 12 in Friday evening’s session, meeting Oklahoma State’s #11 Dakota Geer. He ultimately fell one match short of All-America status, dropping an 8-2 decision to finish his run in the tournament. Venz finishes the 2021 NCAA Championships 2-2 to make his career record at the championships 11-6. He closes the season 9-5 overall.
Medal rounds begin Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and will be televised on ESPN2 with individual mat camera streams available on ESPN3.
