Kicker Barret Pickering has left Nebraska Football

A new kicker will inherit the duties for Husker football in 2020.

Sophomore Barret Pickering cited “health reasons” when he spoke with Lincoln TV station KOLN. Pickering missed the first seven games with an injury in 2019. He only appeared in four games, allowing him to take a redshirt.

The Alabama native 17 of 23 field goals and 50 of 51 extra points as a Husker.

Pickering’s departure leaves four kickers on the roster. Club soccer player Matt Waldoch is the only one who has kicked in a game for Nebraska. Also in the running for the job are redshirt freshman Gabe Heins, walk-on Tyler Crawford, junior-college transfer Chase Contreraz.

Contreraz is an early favorite to win the duties.

Spring practices begin March 9 with the Spring Game set for April 18.
