Nebraska offensive tackle Brenden Jaimes was the first Husker selected in the 2021 National Football League Draft, as he was a fifth-round selection (No. 159 overall) by the Los Angeles Chargers Saturday afternoon.  Jaimes’ selection marked the first time since 2016 that a Husker offensive linemen was picked in the NFL Draft.

Jaimes was a record-breaking offensive lineman for Nebraska, as he started nearly every game of his four-year career as a Husker.  He started all 40 games in which he played, with his 40 career starts ranking second all-time among all offensive linemen in Nebraska history. He started the final 40 games of his career dating back to 2017, setting a program record for consecutive starts by an offensive lineman.

Jaimes started nine games at right tackle as a true freshman in 2017, the most ever by a Husker true freshman at the time. Prior to Jaimes cracking the Husker lineup, all previous true freshmen starters combined to make 11 starts.  Jaimes then started 31 games at left tackle over his final three seasons under Scott Frost and offensive line coach Greg Austin. A native of Austin, Texas, Jaimes was a three-time honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection, and the coaches named him Nebraska’s Offensive MVP in 2019.

Off the field, Jaimes was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten pick while earning his degree in criminology and criminal justice in 2020. He was also a four-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
