Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda improving Nebraska’s punt return

Nebraska’s Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda (13) returns a punt during the third quarter of the game against Colorado on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

By the time he took the field in Week 1, Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda felt like himself again. He had recovered from the torn ACL that kept him sidelined for nearly the entire 2023 season. The knee brace he wore during training camp was gone.

The sixth-year senior has now settled into his role as Nebraska’s punt returner, turning what had been a liability for the Huskers into a strength. Through two games, he’s returned five punts for 42 yards, an average of 8.2 yards per return. A season ago, NU racked up 48 yards collectively. All players, across 12 games. Drops were enough of an issue at one point that Billy Kemp IV lined up deep while injured. He couldn’t run, but he provided a steady set of hands.

Garcia-Castaneda hadn’t returned punts before training camp in 2023, but he spent the past summer working on it, going onto the field and working with the JUGS machine every day after workouts.

“Just being consistent with that every day during the week helped a lot,” Garcia-Castaneda said. “Just reps. It’s just kinda like, coach Ron Brown always refers to it as like batting practice. Just constant reps.”
