Is Tom Osborne wildly underrated as an offensive mind?

I think that most outsiders/younger Nebraska fans think of the Osborne days as like an enhanced version of peak Wisconsin. A top 3 defense and a good offense that will keep the ball and run the clock. In the last 30 years Wisconsin has had 3 top 10 scoring offenses: 1999, 2010, 2011.

But the reality is that couldn’t be further from the truth! TO coached 25 years and had 2 seasons with an offense that didn’t finish in the top 15 in scoring. His very 1st year where they were 36th and his 5th year where they were 31st.

Not only were they in the top 15 for his other 23 years but they were in the top 10 for 20 of them! And those 3 outside the top ten were all 11th and led the nation in scoring 4 times!

I think if you asked fans to describe Nebraska’s success from the 60s-90s they’d think we were a super Iowa who controlled the pace of the game and played elite defense. But Nebraska’s success has always come with great offenses. In fact, historically, Nebraska has been an offensive power much more than a defensive power.

Devaney had a top 15 offense 7 out of his 11 seasons as HC.
