Illinois at Nebraska football: Journal Star predictions

Nebraska is looking to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2016 as the fanbase celebrates 400 consecutive sellouts. Here’s how we think the Huskers’ Big Ten opener pans out.

GAME PICKS

Nebraska hasn’t had a 100-yard rusher this season. Does that change this week?

Amie Just, columnist: No.

Luke Mullin, reporter: Yes, Dante Dowdell handles 20 carries and turns it into a 100-yard day.

Nate Head, sports editor: No change this week. Nebraska sticks with its committee approach. Why wouldn’t they? It’s worked well.

Colton Stone, digital sports editor: No, but not because of a lack of trying. NU has too many options in the backfield to not use them all.

Which team wins the turnover battle?

Mullin: Nebraska, with a Tommi Hill interception serving as the difference.

Head: Let’s call it even in this one. Both teams turn the ball over two times. Fun one under the lights.

Stone: Nebraska forces one late to seal the game, winning the TO battle 2-1.

Who finishes the game as Nebraska’s leading tackler?

Mullin: Linebacker John Bullock will have a busy day stopping the Illini run game.

Head: John Bullock will be all over the field again this week; let’s say he gets the most tackles.

Stone: Mikai Gbayor takes back the team-high total for tackles after only playing one half vs. UNI.

How does the fourth quarter feel? Will the game be decided late?

Just: Tense but ultimately decided before the game’s final minutes.

Mullin: Trailing by two scores, Illinois scores late to reignite its hopes but ultimately falls short in its comeback bid.

Head: I think Nebraska will be ahead in the fourth quarter, but it won’t be a comfortable lead.

Stone: Rhule and Co. will have a lead that gives fans flashbacks to previous collapses, but a win will be locked up late.
