‘I know quarterbacks are going to be well-coached’

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule has seen new quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas be a “difference maker” with young quarterbacks at both Temple and Baylor, so Rhule had confidence that Thomas, in joining NU’s staff, could have the same effect on the Huskers’ trio of scholarship quarterbacks: Heinrich Haarberg, Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin.

“I just trust him,” Rhule said. “I know quarterbacks are going to be well-coached.”

And coached to Rhule’s specification — “from the ground up,” starting with the basics.

“They could be in the Air Raid, they could be in the run-and-shoot, they could be in a pro-style offense, he’s still going to teach them,” Rhule said. “And he’s going to scaffold that teaching. He’ll take them to that next proximal state where they’re learning just what they need to learn.

“He’s not going to dump it all on top of them, he’s not going to keep it too simple. He’s just going to start with the fundamentals and build it as they go.”

Thomas will evaluate Nebraska’s quarterbacks “where they are” without sacrificing high standards and be the “even voice” for his players. He won’t call plays; that job continues to reside with Marcus Satterfield, who also takes over coaching the tight ends.

“Satt’s the OC, that’s never been a question in my mind,” Rhule said. Coaching tight ends will give him greater insight into how to build NU’s run game. Plus, Satterfield’s “aggressive” personality better fits the tight end role.
