I took some mushrooms last night and came up with a proposal to fix college football’s endless struggle in creating a competition field that is fair, competitive, and is able to award a champion without endless debate from biased pundits and media influence.
**Divisions Creation:**
Using the full FBS ranking (I used Alton Sports because that was the first one I found on Google), teams are split up into 13 tiered divisions. Below are the theoretical divisions up to Div VIII because I wanted to see where Nebraska would end up. These divisions could include FCS, Div II, etc., allowing teams to climb up through the ranks.
**Regular Season Structure:**
This proposal adopts the current structure of a 12-game season over 13 weeks with a built-in bye week.
Each team in all tiers plays 9 regular-season games against the other teams in their division.
In addition to regular-season games, teams have three open weeks to schedule ‘non-divisional’ games of their choosing. Historical rival? Cupcake tune-up game? Neutral-site money grab? Go for it.
**Promotion/Relegation System:**
At the end of each season, the bottom three teams from the higher tier are relegated to the lower tier.
The top three teams from the lower tier are promoted to the higher tier.
**Playoffs:**
A two-round playoff system is used during Week 14-15 to determine the final rankings of the top and bottom teams.
The top four teams in each division advance to a seeded playoff to determine the divisional champion. The winners of the first round will advance to play for the divisional championship, while the losers of the first round play for a 3rd place match to determine the final three teams to promote or relegate.
**Benefits:**
* This system encourages competitiveness in each tier, giving teams the opportunity to move up and down based on their performance.
* Promotion/relegation means teams at the top and bottom have a reason to compete at the end of the year, leading to more exciting matchups.
* Traditional lower-tier bowl games that didn’t matter could be used as the divisional playoff destinations, giving more meaning to the historically weak prestige of lesser bowl games.
* Unlike the current conference realignment system, standardizing the number of teams in a division leaves open the ability for teams to play “non-divisional” games that will not count against their divisional record. This allows teams to keep yearly historical rivalry games for the sake of tradition.
* The current system of incrementally increasing the number of college football playoff teams is not sustainable due to the season time window and the risk of increased player injury. This proposal determines a clear champion in a reasonable number of games.
