LINCOLN – The Nebraska baseball team (8-6) exploded for nine runs in the first two innings and then another 13 runs in the sixth to run away for a 22-3 win over Cal Poly (6-9) in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Haymarket Park.
The win gave Nebraska a 2-1 series lead.
Junior lefty Nate Fisher made his third start of the season on the mound, giving the Huskers five solid innings on 94 pitches. Fisher surrendered eight hits, but only one earned run. He struck out four batters while walking three more, earning only his second career win.
His first career-win: at Cal Poly on Mar. 25, 2017.
“I definitely didn’t have my best stuff today,” Fisher said, “but, I just tried to trust the defense and find a way to get outs. It just came down to competing, and that’s what I tried to do.”
Cal Poly had their chances to do damage on offense. The Mustangs had 15 hits, but stranded 15 runners on base.
“Obviously, I didn’t like being in the holes that I was, but being able to pitch out of them is definitely something to build off of.”
Offensively, Nebraska blasted the Mustangs’ pitching staff with a season-high 17 hits. In total, 15 Huskers got in the batters’ box. 11 of those 15 notched at least one hit.
“That was big for us,” Fisher said. “The bats came out hot. That kind of set the tone for the day. So, good win for the team.”
The Huskers play the second game of the doubleheader at 4:35 p.m. Senior Matt Warren (1-0) will start on the mound for Nebraska.
