Huskers to Host Big Ten Quarterfinal Match

Madison, Wis. – Despite falling to Wisconsin, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon, the Nebraska soccer team (7-6-5, 5-3-2 Big Ten) will host Ohio State on Sunday in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.

The Huskers, who grabbed the four-seed for the tournament, outshot Wisconsin (11-4-3, 5-3-1 Big Ten) by a 13-12 margin, but the Badgers scored in both halves to claim the victory.

The Big Red attacked early as freshman Lauryn Anglim recorded her first career goal and the quickest finish of the year for the Huskers. From a free kick in the 36th second, Anglim shot the ball into the goalbox, which bounced over the head of the Wisconsin goalie and into the back of the net.

The Badgers evened the score at one apiece with a goal of their own in the seventh minute. Ashley Martinez shot a header inside the goalbox past Sami Hauk for the equalizer. Wisconsin then extended its lead to 2-1 with another finish in the 35th minute. The Badgers blocked a shot by NU in the midfield, which set up a counter attack for Wisconsin that it capitalized on for the score.

At the half, the Huskers held the 9-7 advantage in shots and the teams were tied with three shots on goal each.

In the opening minute of the second half, sophomore Abbey Schwarz had a chance to even the score, but her shot was saved by the diving Erin McKinney. Wisconsin’s Aryssa Mahrt then led the offensive attack and recorded a brace with goals in the 59th and 68th minutes to take the 4-1 UW lead that it held for the remainder of the game.

Junior goalkeeper Hauk, coming off a career-high 13 saves last game against Penn State, recorded two saves and played the entire 90 minutes.

Up next, the Huskers will face Ohio State in the quarterfinal match of the Big Ten Tournament. Tickets for the match will go on sale Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. (CT) and can be purchased by calling 1-800-8 BIG RED or by visiting Huskers.com/tickets.
