Huskers to Double-Digit Wins With Manhattan Victory

Only 11 games into the 2019-20 season, Husker women’s basketball is at double-digit wins.

“Proud of our team to be ending our non-conference portion of this season 10-1 and excited about some of the growth we’ve seen up to this point and the thought that we’ve got a lot of growth in front of us still,” said coach Amy Williams. “We feel like we still can keep getting better and better and we’re looking forward to doing that heading into Big Ten play.”

A season-high 25 points from Leigha Brown led Nebraska(10-1, 0-0 Big Ten) to a 71-51 win Sunday over Manhattan(3-7, 0-0 Metro Atlantic).

“Feels great just to see kinda that work paying off,” said Brown. “Just want to carry it over to conference play.”

The Jaspers kept things close in the first quarter thanks to five three-pointers in the period. Despite that, the Huskers led 21-19 going into the second quarter. Nebraska took control going into the half with a 37-25 advantage as Brown hit three of her four threes and scored 12 points.

Big Red used runs of 9-0 and 7-0 to open the third and fourth quarters to hold off the nine made threes by the Jaspers in the game and win the final non-conference game of the season.

Besides leading all scorers, Brown added five rebounds and four assists. Kate Cain scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Sam Haiby added 10 points.

“We knew coming in that we had the ability to start off like this,” said Brown. “I think that it’s a huge confidence builder going into conference play. Our conference is arguably one of the toughest in the nation this year.”

Nebraska enters Big Ten play before the end of 2019, hosting Iowa(9-2, 0-0 Big Ten) December 28 before going on the road to Michigan State(7-4, 0-0 Big Ten) December 31.
