Huskers Split Sunday Doubleheader against the Gophers, Dropping the Series 2 Games to 1

After falling in the first game of the series on Friday on a walk off home run in extra innings, the Huskers came out of the gates firing on Sunday in a 10-1 blowout, before losing game two on a wild pitch.

In game one, Minnesota native Luke Roskam followed up Gunner Hellstrom’s RBI single with a two run shot to make it 3-0, NU by the end of the first. The Huskers would tag on seven more runs over the course of the game, including

Nate Fisher had a strong performance on the mound, going eight innings and allowing just one earned run, a solo shot in the top of the fifth.

Game two was a dead heat all the way into the ninth inning, with the game tied up at 2-2. A wild pitch was the deciding factor, as freshman reliever Shay Schanaman threw his pitch into the dirt, allowing the game winning run to come in.

“Shay competed. It was a good ballgame… Both teams were kind of on empty going into that second game,” NU head coach Darin Erstad said on the Husker Sports Network. “We came out, scored a couple of runs, but (we) weren’t able to do anything else.”

The Huskers had plenty of offense in game one, but weren’t able to muster up a run when they needed it most, stranding runners on base in multiple innings. “We had too many hits in one game, and not enough in the other two,” Erstad said.

With the loss, Nebraska is now 13-9 overall and 4-2 in Big 10 play.

The Huskers will be back out on the road again soon. They’ll be taking on K State in Manhattan, Kansas on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:30. Coverage will begin at 6 on KLIN.
