Huskers Set for Rematch with Creighton

Nebraska is set for a rematch with in-state rival Creighton, as the Huskers host the Bluejays at Hawks Field on Tuesday, April 12.

 

First pitch between the Huskers and Bluejays is set for 6:35 p.m.

Tomorrow night’s game will be carried on KLIN (1400 AM) in Lincoln and KXSP (590 AM) in Omaha. Last Time Out

Nebraska was swept in its conference series at home against Big Ten-leading Rutgers last weekend. The Huskers rallied with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Griffin Everitt’s three-RBI double but couldn’t complete the comeback, as Rutgers held on for a 7-5 win in the series opener. Emmett Olson tossed a career-high 6.2 innings and Colby Gomes tied the game in the seventh with a three-run homer, but Rutgers answered with a two-run shot in the eighth to post a 5-4 win on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights clinched the series sweep with a 19-1 win on Sunday in the series finale.

Next Up

Nebraska continues its nine-game homestand with a four-game series vs. BYU on Thursday-Saturday, April 14-16. The two teams begin the series on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. before playing a doubleheader on Friday. Friday’s doubleheader includes a seven-inning game at 2 p.m., followed by a nine-inning game. The Huskers and Cougars wrap up the series on Saturday at 11:05 a.m.

Colby Gomes is hitting a team-best .319 at the plate, followed by Griffin Everitt (.292) and Garrett Anglim (.277).

Career Day for Emmett Olson

Emmett Olson had a career day while making his second career start with the Big Red in Saturday’s game vs. Rutgers last weekend.

• Olson pitched a career-long 6.2 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with a career-high five strikeouts.

• Olson surrendered all three runs on three hits and an NU error in the second inning.

• Following an RBI single in the second, Olson faced the next 17 Rutgers batters without allowing a single hit, giving up only one walk and a hit by pitch.

 

Brockett on the Rise

Jackson Brockett has made seven relief appearances in his freshman campaign, further his season-long outing in each of his last three outings.

• Brockett has totaled 15 strikeouts in 12 innings while limiting opposing batters to a .250 batting average.

• The Omaha native pitched a season-long 4.1 innings and allowed only one run with a season-high four strikeouts in relief vs. Rutgers on Sunday.

• Brockett’s previous two outings included 2.1 innings at Omaha and 1.2 innings at Creighton in key relief appearances against the Mavericks and Bluejays this season.

 Scouting the Creighton Bluejays

• Creighton enters Tuesday night’s midweek matchup with an 18-8 record and 3-0 mark in Big East play after sweeping Georgetown last weekend.

• Alan Roden has a team-high .388 batting average with 12 doubles, a triple, a home run and 21 RBI in 26 starts. Jared Wegner has slugged a team-high three triples, eight home runs and 30 RBI while hitting .367 this season.

• Tuesday night starter Malakai Vetock is 1-0 on the season in five appearances with a 3.68 ERA and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

• As a team, Creighton is hitting .274 with 242 hits, 58 doubles, eight triples, 21 home runs and 180 runs through 26 games.

• The Bluejay pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.57, while allowing 115 runs, 90 earned, and striking out 210 in 227 innings.

• Head coach Ed Servais is in his 19th season at Creighton and holds a record of 605-353-1 with the Bluejays. Servais is in his 27th season overall as a head coach and has a career record of 787- 435-2.

 

The Series

• The Huskers and Bluejays have met 144 times on the diamond, with Nebraska holding an 86-56-2 record in the in-state series.

• Creighton has won the last three meetings after winning earlier this season in Omaha and posting wins in Omaha and Lincoln in 2019. The last time the Huskers won over the Bluejays was on March 26, 2019 with a 6-3 victory in Omaha.
