Huskers Set for Final Big Ten Road Series at Illinois

Nebraska is set to travel for its final road series in Big Ten play this season, as the Huskers venture to Champaign, Ill., for a three-game series at Illinois on Friday-Sunday, May 13-15.

 

First pitch for the series opener on Friday is set for 6 p.m. The Huskers and Fighting Illini continue the series with game two scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on Saturday. Nebraska and Illinois wrap up the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.

 

Two of the three games this weekend will be televised nationally, with Friday’s game on ESPNU and Sunday’s series finale set to air on ESPN2. John Schriffen and Jay Walker will be on the call for both televised broadcasts, while Saturday’s game can be seen on B1G+.

 

Fans can also listen to Greg Sharpe and Nick Handley call all the action of this weekend’s games on the Huskers Radio Network. All three games this weekend will be carried on KLIN (1400 AM) in Lincoln and KXSP (590 AM) in Omaha. Every game this season can be heard for free on Huskers.com and the Official Nebraska Huskers app for both iOS and Android devices.

 

Quick Hits

Garrett Anglim is hitting .293 with nine doubles, four triples, three homers and 27 RBI on the season.

Griffin Everitt leads the Husker offense with 12 doubles and 37 RBI on the season while tied with a team-best seven homers.

Cam Chick and Max Anderson have also homered seven times this season, followed by six home runs by Brice Matthews.

Colby Gomes has posted a .305 batting average with three doubles, four home runs, 12 RBI and 11 runs in 21 games this season.

Emmett Olson sits fourth in the Big Ten with a 2.75 ERA in 17 appearances this season, including six starts.

Braxton Bragg has a team-high five saves on the season with 34 strikeouts and only five walks in 30.1 innings.

Koty Frank has a perfect 4-0 record with a 3.83 ERA and 59 strikeouts this season. Frank has totaled 51.2 innings in 11 total appearances, including seven starts.

• As a team, Nebraska is hitting .246 with 371 hits, 68 doubles, 13 triples, 40 homers and 266 runs.

• The Husker pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.75, while allowing 263 runs, 209 earned, and striking out 381 in 396.1 innings.

 

Scouting the Illinois Fighting Illini

• Illinois comes into the weekend with a 26-19 overall record and 12-6 mark in Big Ten play after sweeping a non-conference series vs. Miami (OH) last weekend.

• Cam McDonald is hitting .371 at the plate with 14 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 48 RBI this season. Jacob Campbell has slugged a team-high eight homers and 42 RBI on the season, while Branden Comia and Justin Janas have six home runs each.

• Friday starter Cole Kirschsieper is 6-2 on the season in 12 starts with a 2.93 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 70.2 innings. Riley Gowens has posted a 5-2 record and 4.97 ERA in 10 starts this season. Tommy Green has made a team-high 19 relief appearances this season and leads the Fighting Illini with four saves.

• As a team, Illinois is hitting .291 with 463 hits, 97 doubles, eight triples, 44 home runs and 322 runs through 45 games.

• The Fighting Illini pitching staff has a team ERA of 5.63, while allowing 276 runs, 248 earned, and striking out 353 in 396.2 innings.

• Head coach Dan Hartleb is in his 17th season at Illinois, boasting a 502-368-1 record at the helm of the Fighting Illini program.

 

Series History

• Nebraska and Illinois have met 25 times on the diamond, with the Fighting Illini holding a slight edge of 13-12 in the all-time series.

• Since joining the Big Ten, the Huskers are 5-6 in 11 meetings with Illinois in Champaign.

• Nebraska won two of three games in last season’s series in Champaign. The Huskers had an 8-6 win in the series opener, while the Fighting Illini tallied a 10-8 victory in game two on Saturday. The Big Red won the series with a 12-7 win in the series finale on Sunday.
