Huskers Open Season with 6-1 Win Against Omaha


The Nebraska softball team (1-0) opened its season with a win on Friday morning, topping Omaha (0-1) by a score of 6-1. 
 
Sophomore Billie Andrews led the Huskers, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs. Andrews matched her career high with two home runs.
 
In the circle, senior Courtney Wallace pitched a complete game, keeping the Mavs scoreless until the final inning. Wallace (1-0) recorded six strikeouts and only one walk. 
 
Kamryn Meyer (0-1) pitched the first six innings for Omaha, giving up two hits and four runs. Sydney Hampton pitched the seventh inning, giving up two hits and two runs (one earned). 
 
The Huskers took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Billie Andrews led off with a walk and Brooke Andrews followed with a single to center field. Both advanced into scoring position on a ground out from freshman Sydney Gray, and both Andrews sisters later scored on wild pitches. 
 
In the top of the fourth, NU added two more runs. Abbie Squier walked before Billie Andrews homered over the right center fence, extending the lead to 4-0. 
 
The Huskers extended their lead to six in the top of the seventh inning. Billie Andrews led the inning off with a home run to left center for her second homer of the morning. Gray reached on an error two batters later. Senior Karlee Seevers came in to pinch run for Gray and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Seevers scored Nebraska’s final run on an RBI double to left center from junior Peyton Glatter
 
The Mavs were scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Alexa Sedlak singled to right field. Rachel Weber followed with an RBI double down the left field line to bring in the lone run of the game for Omaha. 
 
The UNI Dome Tournament continues this afternoon for Nebraska when the Huskers play host Northern Iowa at approximately 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will be on ESPN3 and a live radio broadcast will be available on Huskers.com. 
 
Game Notes

  • Transfer Mya Felder made her first career start as a Husker, earning the start at first base. 
  • Brooke Andrews made her first career start at second base. She has previously earned starts at shortstop and third base. 
  • Billie Andrews recorded two home runs in the game, posting her second career multi-homer game. Her three runs scored were a career high.
  • Freshman Ava Bredwell made her debut as a pinch-hitter.
  • Courtney Wallace tossed the sixth 7.0-inning complete game of her career.
