Huskers officially announce signings of Mack, Kavas

Cam Mack and Matej Kavas became the newest additions to the Nebraska basketball team on Monday, joining Haanif Cheatham, whose signing was made official last week.

Mack is a 6-foot-2 point guard who transferred from Salt Lake Community College.  According to JUCORecruiting.com, he’s the No. 3 JUCO prospect in the nation. This past season, the Austin, Texas native averaged 19 points and 7.5 assists per game. He’ll have three seasons of eligibility left and can play immediately in 2019.

In a press release, NU basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg said “We are excited to add Cam to our program. He possesses elite quickness and playmaking ability and his skillset will allow us to play an up-tempo style. With the graduation of Glynn Watson Jr., finding a lead guard was a priority for us this spring.”

Kavas is a 6-foot-8 guard from Slovenia. He spent the past three seasons at Seattle University, where he averaged a 45 percent mark from three point range. He played in just 24 games this past season, as he was limited with a shin injury. Before he picked up his injury, he was averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per game.

“We are pleased to add Matej to our program,” Hoiberg said in a release. “He is an elite shooter who has the ability to help us space the floor, which is important in our offense. Matej’s experience and versatility will be important with the number of newcomers we will have next year.”

Both Mack and Kavas, along with Cheatham, are vital additions to the 2019-20 squad, who have a dearth of talent with the departures of James Palmer Jr., Glynn Watson Jr., Isaac Copeland and possibly Isaiah Roby, who will be attending the NBA Combine in May.
