Huskers land No. 5 seed in NCAA Tournament, will play Stony Brook Friday

The Nebraska volleyball team was selected as the No. 5 overall seed for the NCAA tournament on Sunday night.

The Huskers (26-4, 19-1 Big Ten) will host the NCAA tournament first and second rounds at the Bob Devaney Sports Center this weekend. This marks Nebraska’s 36th consecutive tournament appearance.

Nebraska will play Stony Brook (18-12) this Friday night at 7 p.m. The Seawolves are champions of the America East conference.

The Huskers finished the 2017 season with a 26-4 overall record and a 19-1 record in the Big Ten. A sweep over Iowa on Friday night sealed a Big Ten championship for the second straight season; a feat that John Cook says is tougher than winning a national title.

“We finished strong,” Cook said on his post game show with John Baylor. “I told the team that winning a Big Ten (title) over 10 weeks and going 19-1 in the toughest conference in the country might be the hardest thing in college volleyball to do. A national championship is six matches in three weeks. This is over ten weeks, on the road. It’s not easily traveling in the Big Ten and winning and being able to play well.”
The conference title was Nebraska’s third in seven years.

Nebraska just missed a top-four national seed. Penn State, Florida, Stanford and Kentucky received the top four seeds from the NCAA Tournament committee.
