Huskers in the NFL Week 9

Week nine of the NFL season was looking like a dud for our former Huskers as Randy Gregory was held in check while both Suh and David were on a bye week. But picking up the slack was a stat-filling performance by Maliek Collins, the return of Andy Janovich and Stanley Morgan doing his best Janovich impression. Here is a look at how our former Huskers did in their Week 9 games.

Husker of the Week

Maliek Collins, Houston Texans

After a slow start to the season, Maliek Collins has really turned it on and his performance against the Dolphins was the best game he’s had in two years. Collins may have only finished with two tackles, but one of those was a sack, he had another quarterback pressure, recovered a fumble and recorded his first interception of his NFL career. Not a bad day. Too bad Collins is on the Texans and they are competing for the 1st pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Good Game

Stanley Morgan, Cincinnati Bengals

Against the instate rival Browns, Stanley Morgan got the most action of his career as his 14 offensive snaps was fourth best of any Bengal receiver. Sure Morgan didn’t get targeted on any passes but was used primarily as a blocker. On one play the Bengals had Morgan cross the formation and function as a lead blocker taking up two defenders on a long Joe Mixon run. Add in a special teams tackle on a punt, it was a good day for Stanley.

Ameer Abdullah, Carolina Panthers

Even though Christian McCaffrey returned to the Panthers, that didn’t mean that Abdullah was relegated to the bench. Instead Abdullah was used as the 2nd back behind McCaffrey and was tied for second in passing targets. Ameer finished the game with one rushing attempt for zero yards but had four catches for 30 yards while averaging 21.5 yards per kick return.

Andy Janovich, Cleveland Browns

In his first game back from injured reserve, Janovich didn’t have a huge game, but he did make it count when he was on the field. Playing only four snaps in the Browns blowout win he was able to make a key block on a Nick Chubb touchdown and made a special teams tackle on a punt.

Solid Game

Sam Koch, Baltimore Ravens

Another strong performance by Koch against the Vikings. In his three punts Koch was able to down the ball inside the ten yard line on a short punt, had a booming 53 yarder on another and then nearly had another punt downed inside the twenty. Punting ain’t sexy, but in the tail end of his career, Koch is still getting the job done.

Jack Stoll, Philadelphia Eagles

Another week and we continue to see Stoll play significant snaps for the Eagles. Used for his blocking prowess Stoll continues to see time in the Eagles two tight end sets. Against the Chargers Stoll played in 49% of the Eagles offensive snaps and didn’t get a single pass thrown his direction.

Rough Game

Randy Gregory, Dallas Cowboys

After having some dominant performances the last several weeks, Gregory was held in check by the Broncos. Gregory was held to only two tackles and one quarterback hurry as the Broncos cruised to a fourteen point win that didn’t even seem that close.

Rex Burkhead, Houston Texans

Sunday was an interesting day for Burkhead who finished with the second most snaps of any running back for the Texans but only finished with two touches. Those two touches were both runs which included an eight yard run and a one yard run. But this was indicative of the Texans offensive struggles against the Dolphins.

Limited Snaps

Luke Gifford, Dallas Cowboys

Gifford played his usual snaps on special teams, but in the Cowboys loss to the Broncos we got to see Gifford get his first snaps on defense. It was only two snaps but they were along the goal line and Gifford did get an assisted tackle on one of the snaps.

Devine Ozigbo, Jacksonville Jaguars

Last week Ozigbo was released by the Saints after they traded for Mark Ingram. Ozigbo didn’t last long on waivers as he was picked up by the Jaguars, the same team whose practice squad he was on when the Saints claimed him. Ozigbo did play against the Bills but it was for only two snaps on special teams and didn’t accumulate any stats.

Cethan Carter, Miami Dolphins

In addition to Carter’s usual role on special teams, he did receive four offensive snaps used as a blocker. Carter did finish the game with one assisted tackle on a second quarter kick off.

Brenden Jaimes, Los Angeles Chargers

Jaimes saw his first action of the season playing four special teams snaps. While they were only on field goal and PAT unit, it has to start somewhere.
