Week 14 was a full weekend for our former Huskers as we got to see Brent Qvale get his first start of the season, Darrion Daniels was active and participating for the first time while a couple of former defenders stole the show. Here’s a look at how each of the former Huskers did in their Week 14 NFL games.
Top Husker Performer
Ndamukong Suh, Tampa Bay
The bye week was good for Suh as he looked fresh against the Vikings and was back to his disruptive self. Suh was constantly in the Vikings backfield for a total of 9 pressures which included three quarterback hits and a sack. If the Bucs want to get back to being a serious Super Bowl contender they are going to need Suh to step up and play more like this.
Had a Good Day
Randy Gregory, Dallas
After last week’s game that surprisingly saw Gregory barely play, he was back to old form against the Bengals wreaking havoc in the backfield. Sure Gregory only was credited with two quarterback hits and a couple of tackles, but his impact on the game was far greater. He nearly had a couple of sacks and on one play while he forced the quarterback to flee on another. Cincinnati knew that Gregory was tough to stop so they often sent an extra defender to chip on him throughout the game limiting his overall production. But that attention tells us everything we need to know.
Brent Qvale, Houston
With the struggles along the offensive line we saw Qvale starting his first game of the season for the Texans as he’s mainly been used only PAT and field goal units. And Qvale was able to answer the call playing a solid game against the Bears. While Qvale wasn’t dominant he did a good job in pass protection to hold his ground and stay in front of defenders while occupying those same defenders in the run game. But what really stood out was when the Texans subbed in former starter Max Sharpring at the end of the game, he got burned for a sack and didn’t even look close to as good as Qvale did.
Lavonte David, Tampa Bay
It was a standard Lavonte David type of game on Sunday vs the Vikings as the linebacker had 9 total tackles which was second best on the team. That being said David was quiet throughout the game because he wasn’t asked to blitz and spent most of his time in coverage locking down tight end Irv Smith Jr. David’s biggest splash play came in the fourth quarter when the Vikings were looking to make it a one score drive and David was able to dive in front of the tight end to break up the pass.
Andy Janovich, Cleveland
With the Browns going back and forth with the Ravens in a 47-42 shootout, we didn’t get to see hardly any Janovich as Baker Mayfield threw the ball 48 times. When we did see Janovich he was killing it as a blocker including sealing off a defender which sprung Nick Chubb for his second touchdown of the game. Janovich did get one ball thrown to him but wasn’t able to make the catch.
The Giants offense took a step back against the Cardinals and barely got over 200 total yards, but can’t put the blame on Gates who had another strong game. Sure Gates may have slid to help on one side while the opposite guard got beat for a sack, but overall Gates was able to win his pass blocks and continues to be a strong run blocker.
Cethan Carter, Cincinnati
In addition to Carter serving his role on special teams where he finished with two tackles, Carter also received 18 total snaps on offense which included running several routes. Carter wasn’t targeted on any throws but he did get some separation at times while also continuing to block at a high level.
Joshua Kalu, Tennessee
With starting safety Kenny Vaccaro out with an injury that meant we got to see more of Kalu who rotated in for half the game as the deep single high safety. Because of that role we didn’t see Kalu have much of an impact on the game with Jacksonville running the ball and throwing many short to intermediate throws.
Darrion Daniels, San Francisco
While Daniels was called up from the practice squad once before this year, Sunday’s game against the Washington Football Team was the first time Daniels was active for a game. Daniels only played in six total snaps and did make a tackle on a three yard run in the first quarter. Daniels played due to an injury along the defensive line and hopefully we’ll get a chance to see more of him as the season winds down.
Sam Koch, Baltimore
With all the points the Ravens were scoring it was surprising that Koch had four punts in this game. With an average of 41 yards per punt Koch wasn’t bombing the ball, but he was able to flip the field and put one punt inside the 20 yard line.
Up and Down Game
Devine Ozigbo, Jacksonville
A blowout loss to the Titans meant we actually got to see a series with Ozigbo in as the runner and of course we didn’t get to see him carry the ball, but instead make four catches in the six snaps he had. Ozigbo had 30 yards receiving and a nice 12 yard reception, but other than that it was another day on the bench.
Ameer Abdullah, Minnesota
With Alexander Mattison out it was Abdullah that served as the primary backup to Dalvin Cook which resulted in not only Abdullah seeing his highest snap count of the season but also five total touches. His three catches and two rushes for a total of 22 yards were the tops of his season.
Had a Rough Day
Chris Jones, Minnesota
After alternating time with Kris Boyd it was Jones who got a majority of the snaps at corner against the Bucs. And we’ll see if that continues next week as Jones had a rough day in coverage giving up a handful of catches underneath and then a 48 yard bomb for a touchdown where Scotty Miller just ran right past him.
No Impact
Stanley Morgan, Cincinnati
Active for his second straight game Morgan saw most of his time on special teams but did get three snaps on offense. Now he didn’t get any targets or special teams tackles, but getting this opportunity late in the season is a new little audition for next year.
Will Compton, Tennessee
Against the Jaguars Compton was regulated to working just special teams duties where he didn’t register a single tackle. An overall pretty quiet day. But that didn’t stop Compton for taking time to celebrate another Titans win.
The week after getting beat for the game winning touchdown Lamar Jackson was back to being a reserve as Bless Austin returned from injured reserve. Jackson only saw the field for five snaps and didn’t see the ball thrown in his direction.
