Iowa City, Iowa – The Nebraska baseball team (22-13, 11-4 Big Ten) salvaged its series against Iowa with a 3-2 win over the Hawkeyes at Duane Banks Field on Sunday afternoon.

Senior right-hander Reece Eddins, making his seventh start of the season, went 7.0 innings and allowed only one run. Shay Schanaman (0.1), Robbie Palkert (0.2) and Colby Gomes (1.0) came on for relief appearances. Eddins earned the win and Gomes picked up his team-high eighth save.

In the opening frame, NU went down 1-2-3. In the bottom of the first, Iowa managed a one-out single, but a double play kept the Hawkeyes from scoring.

The Huskers were retired in order in the top of the second. Iowa left its lone baserunner stranded in a scoreless bottom of the second, as the Hawkeyes registered their second hit of the game.

Nebraska went down in order for the third consecutive inning. The Hawkeyes had runners on first and second after a base hit and hit-by-pitch, but a flyout and fielder’s choice ended a scoreless frame.

In the top of the fourth, Schwellenbach annihilated a home run to left field, his third homer in the last four games. The next three Husker hitters produced outs, as NU held the early 1-0 advantage. Eddins retired all three Hawkeye hitters in the bottom of the fourth.

All three Husker batters in the top of the fifth were retired. In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawkeyes also went down in order.

Alex Henwood hit a one-out bunt single in the top of the sixth, but a double play ended NU’s chance to add runs as the score remained 1-0. After a pair of flyouts in the bottom of the sixth, Iowa’s next two batters reached on an error and a walk, but a groundout kept them on base.

Nebraska plated two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-0 lead. Aaron Palensky reached on an error in the leadoff spot and advanced to second. Joe Acker singled to put runners on the corners. Luke Roskam grounded it to second base, but an error allowed both Palensky and Acker to score on the play. A flyout and strikeout left Roskam stranded. Connor McCaffery homered to left field to cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, Colby Gomes hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt and groundout. He was left stranded on third after a strikeout. Iowa scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to cut Nebraska’s lead to 3-2. NU allowed two walks and committed one error, while giving up one hit during the frame.

The Huskers went down in order in the top of the ninth. Gomes retired all three Hawkeyes in the bottom of the ninth.

The Huskers visit Creighton on Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. The game, set for 7 p.m. (CT), will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
