Huskers High Octane Offense Enjoying a Good Camp, Question Marks Still Remain on the Offensive Line

The Huskers high octane offense has continued to excel at fall camp. Their improvements were especially apparent in a scrimmage on Sunday, when the offense enjoyed their fair share of success against the defense, according to the coaches present.

“We did a lot of good things,” offensive coordinator Troy Walters told reporters at the Hawks Championship Center on Wednesday, adding that the scrimmage was “very competitive. Guys got after it and guys made plays.”

The play of sophomore wide receiver Jaevon McQuitty in particular caught Walter’s eye. Last season, the Columbia, Missouri native appeared in six games but did not have a single reception. However, according to Walters, McQuitty looks like a completely different player this year, having a newfound confidence in himself that wasn’t present last season.

“He just keeps getting better,” Walters said. “He has that sense of urgency. He wants to be a part of this team and he wants to contribute to the offense. It’s a good sign.”

Quarterback Adrian Martinez spoke to reporters as well. Martinez mentioned that the defense looks like a “new group” this year. The defensive backs have especially stood out to the true sophomore, who says their newfound confidence has resulted in some smack talk during practice.

“I love it,” Martinez said, smiling. “I mean, bring it on. Shoot. I love anything that’s going to be competitive. If that’s going to get them fired up, good. If that’s going to get our receivers fired up, good.”

That confidence and swagger has translated into the defensive backs playing more aggressively in practice. “I think they’ve been doing a great job of just playing fast,” Martinez said. “They’re better than they were last year.”

In other news and notes from practice:

  • According to offensive line coach Greg Austin, nobody has begun to separate themselves at the interior of the offensive line yet. Austin said that redshirt freshman Will Farniok has been “getting better” but still “has a ways to go.”
  • Maurice Washington has been putting his eye popping athleticism on display during practice. Walters said that Washington has “gotten a little bigger and now he understands the offense so he can play faster.”
  • Wide receivers will be done “by committee” according to Martinez, meaning that multiple players outside of J.D. Spielman will see some playing time there.
  • Besides McQuitty, Walters also mentioned that freshman QB Luke McCaffrey was impressive during the scrimmage
