Huskers Hang Tough To Defeat Bears, 2-1

Behind the aid of two Huskers’ first career goals, the Nebraska soccer team (3-0-0) handed Baylor its second loss of the season with the 2-1 defeat at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field on Thursday evening.

Nebraska struck early as freshman Sarah Weber netted her first career goal in the eighth minute. Recording her third assist in three games, Abbey Schwarz delivered a pass across the field to Weber who shot the ball past the Baylor goalie into the bottom left corner of the net.

A hot and humid game plagued with injuries on both sides, Weber went down shortly after her goal with a right ankle injury and would not return to play.

In the 11th minute, the Bears (1-2-0) broke Nebraska’s two-game shutout streak and tied the match with Gabby Mueller’s goal past Sami Hauk, her first allowed goal of the season.

Nebraska retook the lead in the 43rd minute with a put-back by Olivia Brown, the senior defender’s first goal of her career. Brown headed the ball into the crossbar off a Dakota Chan pass, got the rebound and headed the ball again, but this time over the goal line. The Huskers took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Despite the Bears outshooting Nebraska by a 20-13 margin, including a 9-7 edge in shots on goal, Baylor was unable to find the back of the net again as they were kept scoreless in the second half.

The Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week, Hauk tallied eight saves on the way to her third win of the season. She was one of three Huskers to play the full 90 minutes along with Brown and fellow senior Grace Brown

The Huskers conclude their two-game road trip on Sunday when they face Oklahoma in Norman, starting at 1:00 p.m. CT.
