Huskers Fall 6-5 Against Bluejays

Nebraska fell 6-5 against Creighton in the resumption of last month’s suspended game on Tuesday evening at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

Nebraska (25-20-1) scored five runs on nine hits and three errors, while Creighton (23-18) had six runs on nine hits and an error.

Kyle Perry pitched three innings in the start, allowing two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Michael Garza tossed the next 1.2 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits. Corbin Hawkins and Jake Bunz tallied a scoreless inning each for the NU bullpen. Shay Schanaman took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning. Will Walsh pitched the final inning, striking out all three batters he faced.

Max Anderson was 3-for-5 at the plate, while Brice Matthews went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run. Efry Cervantes had a 1-for-3 game with a double and two runs, and Casey Burnham, Charlie Fischer and Cole Evans recorded one hit.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Creighton opened the scoring with a two-run homer by Andrew Meggs in the top of the third. A two-out double down the left-field line from Ben Gbur in the fourth expanded the lead to three for the Bluejays.

Burnham began the bottom of the fourth by lifting a solo home run into the Creighton bullpen in right to bring the Huskers within two.

The Bluejays got the run back with an RBI double by Nolan Clifford following a two-out error by the Husker defense.

Nebraska trimmed the deficit to one with a pair of runs on two hits in the fifth. Cervantes drew a four-pitch walk to set up Matthews’ 433-foot two-run blast that sailed into the left-field berm.

Hawkins and Bunz worked around a hit batter and an NU error to hold off the Bluejays in the sixth, while the NU offense plated the tying run on three hits in the bottom half of the inning.

Cervantes smacked a first-pitch two-out double to right, while Evans’ RBI single through the right side plated Cervantes to tie the game at four.

The Husker offense loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs after Anderson singled, Garrett Anglim was hit by pitch and Fischer drew a walk. The game was suspended due to lightning as Gabe Swansen was heading to the plate.

Swansen began action in Omaha by lifting a sacrifice fly to center, plating Anderson to give the Huskers a 5-4 lead.

A pair of RBI doubles from Gbur and Nolan Sailors plated the tying and go-ahead run to give Creighton the 6-5 lead in the eighth.

Nebraska had the tying run on third with two outs in the eighth after Matthews walked, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw from the CU catcher, but the Huskers couldn’t bring home the tying run.
