Huskers coach heaps praise on freshman WR Carter Nelson

Dylan Widger-USA TODAY Sports

Nebraska football freshman wide receiver Carter Nelson has been impressing the coaching staff throughout preseason camp. Wide receivers coach Garret McGuire has previously talked about the energy he brought to the team. Special teams coach Ed Foley also gave him a shout-out on Tuesday as the latter met with the media.

Nelson originally came to the program as a tight end before being moved to wide receiver during camp. Now, he is working on refining the ins and outs of his game at the receiver spot. The Huskers certainly have an ample amount of depth at the wide receiver position, but Nelson’s athleticism could make things interesting as far as where he sits in the room.

Carter Nelson is a really good football player. We all know he is talented but he has a really good sense of how to play football… he’s shown me a lot of discipline and very good understanding of what we’re trying to do with special teams. He won’t do anything glamorous early on for us and to play a true freshman tells you a lot about his ability.

Nelson has enough skill and athleticism to make an immediate impact. The Huskers could risk burning his redshirt, but he has the potential to be one of the best players on the field.
