Huskers Claim Victory in NCAA Opener Against Long Island Sharks

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska volleyball team, holding the top rank nationally, commenced their NCAA Tournament journey with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Long Island University on Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The victory in front of a spirited crowd of 8,599 fans elevates the Huskers’ impressive season record to 29-1.

Balanced Offensive Might Leads to Sweep

Nebraska showcased a well-rounded offensive performance with five players notching at least six kills each. Merritt Beason led the pack with an outstanding 13 kills, hitting an impressive .478. Harper Murray, making her NCAA Tournament debut, contributed nine kills, while Ally Batenhorst added seven. The middle blockers, Andi Jackson and Maggie Mendelson, each recorded six kills, with Mendelson matching her career-high in kills and blocks (four).

The Huskers dominated with 44 kills to LIU’s 28 and outperformed the Sharks with a .280 hitting percentage against LIU’s .151. Nebraska also held a substantial 46-33 lead in digs and recorded seven service aces, showcasing their all-around prowess.

Set Recaps Highlight Nebraska’s Strength

The first set saw Nebraska taking an early lead, bolstered by strong performances from Mendelson and Beason. The Huskers closed the set confidently at 25-13, limiting LIU to a negative hitting percentage.

In the second set, LIU attempted to keep pace, but Nebraska’s consistent offense, led by Murray and Beason, extended their lead to secure a 25-16 victory.

The third set presented more challenges as LIU took an early lead. However, the Huskers’ resilience shone through, with key contributions from Murray, Beason, and Jackson. The set witnessed several lead changes before Nebraska sealed their win with a 25-22 scoreline, culminating in a match-ending block by Reilly and Jackson.

Up Next: A Showdown with Missouri

With this win, Nebraska advances to face Missouri in the NCAA Second Round, scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Missouri enters the match following their sweep of Delaware earlier on Friday.
