Huskers Can’t Close Upset Bid at No. 19 Northwestern

At the time of year when every game feels like it has more weight on postseason hopes, Sunday was almost a shot in the arm for the Huskers.

Almost.

Nebraska (16-10, 6-9 Big Ten) dominated the game on the defensive end, holding No. 19 Northwestern (22-3, 12-2 Big Ten) to just 28.8-percent shooting for the game. The Wildcats led 16-15 after the first quarter but the Huskers took over by the half 20-16. The game stayed close in the second-half with Nebraska leading 56-51 with under three minutes left, but the Wildcats ended the game on a 9-0 run to survive with a 60-56 win and avoid the upset.

The Huskers shot 43.1-percent from the field for the game, but committed 15 turnovers.

The Wildcats won the battle at the free throw line, going 17-of-19 compared to Nebraska’s 8-of-11.

Leigha Brown scored 14 points as one of two Huskers in double figures. Kate Cain narrowly missed a triple-double, contributing 12 points, 12 rebounds, and seven blocked shots.

Nebraska continues on the road at Ohio State (16-9, 9-5) February 19.
